Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the NZ500, NZ700, NZ800 and NZ900?
Contrast, brightness and lens quality — plus two features that only appear higher up the range. The NZ500 gives you 2,000 lumens and 40,000:1 native contrast in JVC's compact chassis. The NZ700 shares that body but doubles contrast to 80,000:1 and adds a DCI-P3 filter for cinema-grade color. The NZ800 steps up to 2,700 lumens, 100,000:1 and a 17-element all-glass lens; the NZ900 is the flagship at 3,300 lumens and 150,000:1 with a 100mm premium lens.
The dividing line worth knowing about is at the NZ800. It and the NZ900 are the only models with 3D support and with Clear Motion Drive frame interpolation — the NZ500 and NZ700 have neither, and can only do black frame insertion for motion. If you have a 3D Blu-ray collection you want to keep watching, that alone decides the model for you, and 3D also needs the optional emitter and glasses. Otherwise, in a properly darkened room it is the contrast difference you notice most, which is why we ask about your room before recommending a tier.
What do the RS model numbers mean — is a DLA-RS3200 different from a DLA-NZ800?
They are the same projector. JVC sells the Procision series (NZ) through consumer retail and the Reference series (RS) through the custom installation dealer network. An RS3200 and an NZ800 have identical specifications and identical performance — the visible difference is the color of the ring around the lens. As a custom integrator we most often supply the Reference line, and which line we quote can depend on availability at the time. Either way you are getting the same projector, so it is worth comparing on model tier rather than on the letters in front of the number.
Is the 8K on the NZ800 and NZ900 real 8K?
It puts 8K worth of pixels on your screen, but not from 8K panels — the same idea as Epson's 4K, one tier up. The NZ800 and NZ900 use native 4K D-ILA devices with JVC's second-generation 8K e-shiftX, which shifts the image in four diagonal directions fast enough that your eye resolves detail well beyond 4K alone. They also accept genuine 8K/60p and 4K/120p sources.
Worth noting where each brand starts from: JVC is shifting up from native 4K panels, while Epson's pixel shifting starts from 1080p panels to reach 4K. Both are honest about what lands on screen, and both work — but the starting resolution is not the same.
In practice, e-shiftX arrives on the two models that are already JVC's strongest — the NZ800 and NZ900 pair it with their highest native contrast and best lenses. That combination is what makes the picture, and it is a good reason to look at this tier.
Do I need a completely blacked-out room for a JVC?
No. A dedicated dark theater is where a JVC is at its most spectacular, but you do not need one to see why people buy them. Because the black level comes from the D-ILA panel itself rather than from processing tricks, the advantage travels — a JVC in an ordinary media room still produces blacks and shadow detail that other projectors cannot match in the same room.
Light control helps more than most people expect, and costs far less than moving up a model tier. Shades on the windows you actually watch against, darker paint on the wall behind and around the screen, and controlling reflective surfaces will do more for the image than almost anything else. Even partial improvements pay off.
The one thing to plan honestly is brightness. A very large screen in a room with a lot of daytime light asks a lot of any projector, and that is a question of lumens and screen choice rather than of black level. Do I ever have to replace a lamp, and what maintenance does it need?
No lamp. Every current JVC in the line uses a BLU-Escent laser light engine rated at 20,000 hours, with nothing to buy and no gradual color shift as a bulb ages. At four hours of viewing a day that is well over a decade, and it means brightness stays stable from the day it is set up — part of why a calibration on a laser projector holds.
There is one recurring task: the air filter needs cleaning, and JVC recommends every 2,000 hours — more often than most projectors, and more often still in a dusty room. The filter is there to keep the cooling airflow clean rather than to protect the optics; the light path itself is sealed, so dust does not reach the panels or show up on screen. What a clogged filter does is let heat build up, which shortens component life and can trigger a protective shutdown. It takes minutes, and we factor filter access into how the projector is mounted.
Is a new projector good out of the box, or does it need calibration?
It needs work, and it is worth separating two things that often get called the same name.
Configuration and optimization come with every installation we do. Lens shift, zoom and focus are dialed in for your exact throw and screen, Frame Adapt HDR is matched to your screen size and gain, picture modes are set for your room rather than a showroom, and the signal chain is sorted out end to end. A projector this capable left on factory defaults gives up a visible amount of what it can do, so we never hand one over that way.
Full instrumented calibration — measuring your specific projector and screen and correcting grayscale and color to a reference standard — is a separate service. What it costs depends on scope, and there is more than one way to do it, including having a calibrator work on site in your room. Can I mount it myself and just have you calibrate it?
You can, though the two are harder to separate than they look. Placement determines throw distance, lens shift range and whether the lens ends up working near the edge of its adjustment, which affects sharpness. Getting the mount position wrong is a lot more work to correct afterwards than to plan for beforehand. We are happy to consult on placement if you want to do the physical install yourself, but most people find it simpler to have the mounting and the setup done as one job.
Will a JVC work with my existing screen, or do I need a new one?
Often it works, but the screen is half the picture and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Screen size drives whether the projector has enough lumens, and gain and material affect black level, uniformity and viewing angle — a high-gain screen can undo a JVC's contrast advantage. We look at your screen, throw distance and seating layout together, and if your current screen is a good match we will say so.
