Epson Projectors

It puts a full 3840x2160 image on your screen, but not from 4K panels — and the distinction is worth understanding. Every Epson home cinema model, from the LS9000 up through the Q-Series, uses three 1080p-native 3LCD panels with Epson's 4-way pixel shifting to build the 4K image. Their newer four-phase shifting is a real step up from earlier two-phase versions and resolves detail well beyond 1080p.

In practice this matters less than the spec sheet suggests. At normal seating distances, brightness, contrast and how well the projector is set up have far more effect on how a picture looks than the difference between shifted and native 4K. It is worth knowing what you are buying, not worth losing sleep over.

It comes down to your room, and we sell both so we have no reason to push you either way.

JVC's advantage is native contrast and black level, which is why we recommend one for a dedicated, properly darkened theater — that is where deep blacks show, and where a JVC pulls decisively ahead. Epson's advantage is brightness per dollar and a much broader range. If your room has windows, light-coloured walls or any ambient light you cannot fully control, an Epson will very often give you the better-looking picture, because a bright image in a real room beats a reference image you cannot see properly.

Epson also reaches places JVC does not — the QL-Series goes to 6,000 and 10,000 lumens for very large screens and bright rooms. Tell us about the room and the answer usually becomes obvious.

Because they are measuring different things, and comparing them directly is misleading. Epson quotes dynamic contrast — figures like 2,500,000:1 on the LS12000 — which is measured with the laser dimming between the brightest and darkest scenes. JVC quotes native contrast, measured within a single frame, which is why their numbers look smaller at 100,000:1 or 150,000:1.

Native contrast is the harder specification to achieve and the one that determines whether blacks look black in a dark scene that also contains highlights. So a bigger dynamic number does not mean a better black level. Treat these figures as comparable only within a brand, never across brands.

They are three tiers with different installation assumptions. The LS models — LS9000, LS11000, LS12000 — are Epson's established home cinema line, 2,200 to 2,700 lumens with a built-in motorized lens, and they suit most dedicated theaters and media rooms. The QB1000 opens the newer Q-Series: 3,300 lumens, a brighter and more capable all-in-one body, still with its lens built in.

The QL3000 and QL7000 are a different proposition. At 6,000 and 10,000 lumens with larger 1.04-inch panels, they are built for very large screens up to 300 inches and rooms with real ambient light — and they are body-only, with the lens chosen separately.

No, and this catches people out. Both ship body-only, and the lens is a separate purchase from Epson's range of interchangeable High Precision Lenses. That is deliberate rather than an omission: at these screen sizes the right lens depends entirely on your throw distance and mounting position, so Epson lets the installation dictate the optics instead of forcing a compromise.

It does mean the projector alone is not the whole cost, and that lens choice has to be settled before anything is ordered. We work that out from your room dimensions and mounting position as part of the design.

This is where Epson tends to be the right answer. A dedicated dark theater flatters black levels, but most rooms are not that, and a projector that is too dim in a bright room disappoints no matter how good its contrast specification is.

Epson's range runs from 2,200 lumens up to 10,000, so there is usually a model that suits the light you actually have. Light control still helps — blinds or shades make a real difference and cost far less than moving up a projector tier. Screen choice matters too, and an ambient-light-rejecting screen paired with a bright Epson can produce a genuinely good picture in a room you would not have thought suitable.

No lamp. Every current Epson home cinema model uses a laser light source rated at around 20,000 hours, so there is nothing to buy and no gradual dimming or colour shift the way lamps used to bring.

Like essentially every projector, it has an air filter that needs cleaning periodically — Epson recommends roughly every 5,000 hours, and more often in a dusty room or if the projector sits low. That is a comparatively generous interval; JVC, for instance, recommends every 2,000 hours. The filter keeps the cooling airflow clean rather than protecting the optics, so a neglected one is a heat problem rather than a picture problem — but heat shortens component life, so it is worth mounting the projector somewhere you can actually reach the filter.

It is configured and optimized, which is not quite the same thing. Every installation includes getting lens shift, zoom and focus right for your throw and screen, setting picture modes for your room rather than a showroom, matching HDR handling to your screen size, and sorting the HDMI signal chain end to end.

Full instrumented calibration — measuring your specific projector and screen and correcting greyscale and colour to a reference standard — is a separate service, priced by scope, and there is more than one way to approach it including a calibrator working on site.
